“Actually all I want to do is to make beautiful things,” says Dutch artist Marina Radius.
Marina Radius was born in1953 in Indonesia, while her parents lived there working for Shell. In 1958 her family moved back to The Netherlands. After high school, Marina went to the Art College in Rotterdam in the early 70s.
“As long as I can remember I have felt the need to create things; at first drawing and sculpting in clay, later on also painting and sculpting in bronze and stone,” Marina says.

A love of animals
Animals are one of Marina’s favorite subjects, especially horses and dogs.

Marina’s comments about the above painting: I saw these donkeys somewhere in a meadow, but the landscape surrounding them is purely fantasy.

Fantasy mixed with reality
Marina also likes to paint dreamlike fantasy landscapes and still lifes.
Working through grief
After Marina’s mother passed away she felt the need to do this portrait (below); her mother was very fond of flowers, hence the background. “My father cherished it as a dear memory for years and painting it somehow helped me deal with the grief,” Marina says.

The best work comes from within
“In my opinion, the best work comes from within,” Marina advises other artists. “So not try to make art because you think people will like it or because you think it may sell, but because it’s what comes from your own inspiration and needs to be created.”
