“In the end, I hope my creation becomes a dreamy world people can escape to,” says collage painting artist, Jorien Stel.
Jorien Stel is a Dutch collage painting artist. As a child, she found her father’s drawing fascinating. This fascination developed into a profession that started with drawing, painting, and the experimentation of different mediums. As time progressed, she began to commission several paintings for her friends and her family but she wasn’t yet satisfied.
She began to explore her artistry in search of a style that would set her apart from other painters. It was during this introspection she discovered photography and photomanipulation. Before this discovery, she was exploring the use of paper in painting. Mixing these styles opened her to a world of artistic possibilities, and there, she found her style of art.

Collage painting’s artistic essence
Jorien describes her paintings as an exciting combination of different pictures, recycled papers from magazines, and acrylic paints that project strength, beauty, mystery, and humor. The essence of her art lies in the seamless manner in which words and forms harmonize to stimulate consciousness.

Artistic style
Jorien says her art can be identified as a photographic collage style. She mentions how multidimensional her works can be, judging from the multiple elements involved in the finishing. “In my Paper-Art paintings, you can always discover something new! From a distance, it looks like a painting, but from up close you can see the words, stories, and the teasing little details,” says Jorien.

Artistic influences
She is inspired by different styles of art, including street art and the old masters, but she adds lots of flowers. Away from style influences, Jorien derives inspiration from her imagination and encounter with everyday life. From a beautiful face, little flowers and animals, to thinking outside the boundaries and possibilities of the real world.

Legacy and expectations
Being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016 couldn’t deter Jorien from pursuing her art. This relentless nature of hers is what she wants her art to inspire people to remember and to imitate. Also, she hopes her art can provide a world away from the real world where people can find peace and balance. A world that is surreal and dreamy.
